- Canadian Citizenship Applications
Similar to applying for permanent residence, those wishing to become Canadian citizens must first begin by submitting an application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
To be eligible to become a Canadian citizen, you must:
- Been a permanent resident physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days during any of the three qualifying calendar years that are fully or partially within the five years immediately before you apply
- Havefile income taxes for any four taxation years that are fully or partially within the six years immediately before you apply
- Intend to reside in Canada
- Be able to prove language requirement
- Be able to pass citizenship test
Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will then be asked to sit and pass the citizenship test. IRCC will provide citizen applicants with a study guide to help them achieve a passing grade on the 30-minute test. Applicants under the age of 18 and over 55 will not be required to take the test.
Some applicants may also be asked to undergo an interview before a citizenship judge. Citizenship applicants who successfully meet all eligibility requirements and pass all tests (and interview, if requested) are required to attend a citizenship ceremony where they will receive their certificate of Canadian citizenship and become official Canadian citizens.
You may be ineligible for Canadian citizenship if you
- Are under a removal order
- Have a criminal record or are facing changes in Canada
- Been refused Canadian citizenship as a result of misrepresentation
- Had your Canadian citizenship revoked
