Spousal/ Common-law Partner Sponsorship
Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their spouse /common law partner to come to Canada and live permanently.
Eligibility
You may be eligible to sponsor your spouse, conjugal partner, or common-law partner if-
- You are a Canadian citizen or permanentresident
- Are at least 18 years old
- Live in Canada, or planning to return to Canada once your spouse or partner becomes a permanent resident of Canada
- Are able and willing to provide for the basic financial needs of your spouse or partner for threeyears
Parent/ Grandparent Sponsorship
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a unique Immigration program allowing both Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residence.
Who Can Sponsor Their Parents Or Grandparents Under The PGP?
To sponsor your parents or grandparents under the PGP, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- have received an Invitation to apply;
- be at least 18 years of age;
- live in Canada;
- have sufficient income to meet the needs of your parents and grandparents to be sponsored; and
- meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
Dependent Child/ Relative
To be eligible for sponsorship, children must meet the definition of dependent children. Whether they are the biological or adopted child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, a child is considered to be dependent if they are not married or in a common-law relationship and are under the age of 22. A child over the age of 22 will be considered dependent if they suffer from a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves.
Dependent Child Sponsorship Requirements
As with all family sponsorship streams, both the sponsor and the sponsored person must meet eligibility requirements for the child to be granted permanent residence.Parents wishing to sponsor their child must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Not be in prison, charged with a serious offense, or bankrupt
Other Relative Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and/or permanent residents who meet general eligibility requirements can sponsor certain orphaned relatives or family members (e.g. brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandchild). It is possible only if the relatives meet the following requirements:
- They are related to you by blood or adoption.
- Both their mother and father passed away.
- They are under 18 years of age.
- They are single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship).
If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you must:
- support your relative financially when they arrive
- be able to meet basic needs for yourself and your relative, such as:
- food
- shelter
- clothing
- make sure your relative doesn’t need social assistance
